Krk and Baska – events worth attending

The island of Krk is proud of its rich historic-cultural heritage and is trying to preserve it. With this goal in mind the settlement, during the summer months, hosts numerous cultural events: performances, concerts and exhibitions. We should accentuate the “Krk summer performances” that have been taking place for more than 50 years every summer and last from the end of June to second half of August. Another well known event is the “Krk folklore festival” with a 70 years long tradition organized every year in another settlement where you can see folk dances, hear traditional music and take a look at the traditional costumes. You can take a look at the atmosphere here:

If visiting or staying in the town of Krk you must take a look at the Krk fair – Lovrečeva that takes place from 8-10 of August, and is a three day event in celebration of St. Lawrence where you will meet the rich island history in an interesting way.

From sporting events we would like to mention the interesting regattas that take place in the settlement of Krk and they are “Krk open” and “Krk sails” that take place in the month of August.

Also as part of the “Summer performances” that have been taking place for 55 years now, you can see concerts and theatre performances that are organized on historic localities in months of July and August.

From June to November in Baska you can be a part of the event under the name “Baska cultural summer” and see exhibitions, folklore and musical performances or simply get acquainted with old local customs such as Bašćanski pir – Baska wedding.

Jazz lovers will come to their own in Omisalj where the traditional Fertinates jazz festival takes place in second part of July with performances from popular jazz musicians.

In all other settlements on the island public feasts, fishermen nights, exhibitions, klapa concerts, domestic musician concerts and various sporting events take place. The most famous ones are Stomorina in Omisalj on the 16th of August, various fishermen nights that take place in settlement centres where you can try fish specialities and other. It is because of the rich gastronomic offer of the island why during the summer there are various events dedicated to local delicacies and products. Worth mentioning are: “Wine days” on the island Krk in Vrbnik (Dani vina otoka Krka) taking place in the last weekend of August that are dedicated to the well known wine Vrbnička žlahtina; “Fig days” (Dani smokve) in the end of August in Krk, a gastro festival dedicated to fig and its preservation; “Šurlice days” (Dani šurlica) an event dedicated to making and tasting this traditional type of pasta organized in June in Punat and in Vrbnik in July. Off season you can visit “Olive days” (Dani masline) in Punat (end of November, beginning of December) and “Eko etno fest” in Malinska dedicated to promoting Croatian traditional produce and wine (last weekend of May).
